Ingredient Rundown

The Stoke Newington Farmers Market was full of delights this weekend. Now in season: cherry tomatoes (full size tomatoes coming this weekend!), courgettes, turnips, peppers, new potatoes, and a host of different berries. I am pleased to have tried Josta berries, a cross between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant. It is a perfect balance of tart and sweet and the berries would be delicious in an Eton Mess of sorts, with cream, yogurt, in a crumble, or even on their own. Summer is at its peak so run to your local farmers market and see what you can pillage. Recipe ideas to come soon.

Also a quick mention for a new find - a shop on the Islington/Clerkenwell borders called 'Unpacked'. The basic idea is noble and quite unique. Instead of having a lot of packaging that wastes resources, everything (mostly pulses, nuts, and other staple ingredients) is in bulk form, waiting to be carried home in your own container. Whether or not this is truly more carbon friendly is probably a bit up in the air, but the logic behind it is sound: reduce, reuse, recycle. Give it a go sometime.

Recipes and thoughts to come soon.
